When I asked what you wanted to see this year in stories, a handful of you asked for shelf help. I think you know they’re my fave and I want to give the people what they want! Ha! If you have a large shelf or built-ins in your home, consider yourself lucky! I know they can be daunting, but they’re a great place to add personality and interest to a room. They’re actually my favorite thing to decorate! I am NO expert, but after doing this many times, I’ve determined some key components to getting it right.
If the room is already colorful, consider focusing on decorating the shelves with a neutral color scheme. If your room is already pretty neutral, they could be a fun place to incorporate some color!
As you’re planning the space and gathering items, it is important to use this space as a stage to display books (function) and only your most favorite decorative pieces (form). Take covers off hardback books if they’re more attractive that way. Depending on the height needed on that part of the shelf, try standing some in vertical groups and placing some horizontally with a small object on top. Gather your favorite decorate objects to play with. These shelves will inevitably be a focal point and you don’t want to draw attention to the mundane. There are a couple of things on ours that I’m not in love with anymore, so my hope is to replace them with travel treasures soon.

Use a large statement piece as an anchor on the top and bottom shelves. Consider an oversized basket to anchor the bottom (which also doubles as storage)!

To add interest, keep your eyes moving, and provide balance, vary heights of items on each shelf and use a mixture of textures and finishes. Spread out objects that are similar heights. Look for items that are woven, metal, wood, stone, and glass. Then spread out items with like textures and finishes.

Vary placement of the same types of items. For example, an oversized frame shouldn’t be right above another oversized frame. The exception to this would be books if your shelf is primarily for their storage.

Prepare yourself for lots of stepping back, moving things around, and even starting over. I promise your patience and persistence will pay off! Please share with me if you give it a go. OR I’m always happy to oblige invites from girlfriends that include drinks & decorating!!
